Pilates FAQ's

The Basics

  • What is Classical Pilates? It is the practice of the original exercises created by Joseph Pilates, performed in a specific sequence designed to move the body through a full range of motion. The pilates method is a series of exercises that are put together intelligently with purpose.

  • How is it different from "Contemporary" Pilates? While contemporary styles often modify exercises based on modern biomechanics, classical Pilates sticks to the original order and the specific designs of the original equipment to build uniform strength.

  • What should I wear? Wear comfortable, fitted workout clothes so the instructor can see your alignment. Most studios require grip socks for safety and hygiene.

Results & Frequency

  • How often should I attend? For the best results, consistency is key. Most practitioners aim for 2–3 times per week

  • It is required to do at least 8 privates or semi privates with a friend, family member or colleague with one of our Classically Certified instructors prior to going into a class unless you have had experience.

  • When will I see results? As Joseph Pilates famously said: "In 10 sessions you'll feel the difference, in 20 sessions you'll see the difference, and in 30 sessions you'll have a whole new body."

  • Is it good for weight loss? While Pilates tones and builds lean muscle. It is best used in conjunction with a healthy diet and cardiovascular activity for significant weight loss.

Health & Accessibility

  • Do I need to be flexible to start? No. Pilates is designed to improve flexibility over time. Modifications are available for every fitness level.

  • Can I do Pilates if I have an injury? Yes. It is often used for injury rehabilitation and pain relief, particularly for back issues, but you should always consult your doctor first.

  • Is it just for women? Absolutely not. Joseph Pilates was a man who originally developed this system for men, including athletes and soldiers. Pilates movements are very calisthenic in nature and there for good for any body!
